History of Grama Panchayat

Edarikode is an agricultural village panchayat located in Thennala village of Tirurangadi taluk in Malappuram district. In the old days, this area was known as 'Edarkode' and is a place with historical memories related to Tipu Sultan's military campaigns and the traditional heritage associated with the Kottakkal Samoothiri rule. Ivandrankavu in Kurukkayil is a famous ancient worship center here. Agriculture, paddy cultivation, tapioca, ginger, pepper, betel leaves, and other products formed the economic foundation of the village. Cottage industries like 'nurukku' making, toy making, and Vallikotta metalwork were major local industries. The village had ancient mosques, temples, and prayer halls. Agricultural customs like 'nira' and folk songs were part of the local culture. In the 1950s, cultural organizations like the Young Star Sports Club, Mahila Samajam, later the Bukhara Library, and 'YAK' came into existence. During the cholera outbreak in 1942, the treatment provided by local doctors brought relief to the people. ‘Velamma's oil’ and the medicines given by the Mullakkoya families were also well-known.

On March 1, 1979, as per the order of the Kerala government, parts of thennal and Ponmundam panchayats were merged to form Edarikode Grama Panchayat. Former ministers U.A. Beeran Sahib and P. Ibrahim Haji played a crucial role in the formation of the panchayat.
